1. What is a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)?

A DOC is a diesel exhaust aftertreatment device that oxidizes carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and part of the soluble organic fraction (SOF) in diesel exhaust.

2. How does a DOC work?

Hot exhaust gases pass through a catalyst-coated substrate where CO and HC are oxidized, and part of NO is converted into NO₂.

3. What pollutants does a DOC reduce?

A DOC primarily reduces carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and the soluble organic fraction (SOF) of diesel exhaust.

4. What is the difference between a DOC and a DPF?

A DOC oxidizes gaseous pollutants, while a DPF physically captures particulate matter (PM).

5. What is the difference between a DOC and a POC?

A DOC focuses on oxidizing CO, HC, and SOF, whereas a POC also targets the oxidizable organic portion of particulate matter in certain applications.

6. Why does a DOC help DPF regeneration?

A DOC converts part of NO into NO₂, which promotes passive soot oxidation in downstream DPF systems.

7. What catalyst materials are used in a DOC?

DOCs commonly use platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) catalysts coated on ceramic or metallic honeycomb substrates.

8. Does a DOC require Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?

No. A DOC performs oxidation reactions using oxygen present in the exhaust and does not require DEF.

9. Which vehicles commonly use DOCs?

DOCs are widely used in diesel passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, buses, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, marine engines, generators, and other diesel-powered applications.

10. Does a DOC require maintenance?

Routine inspection of the exhaust system and catalyst condition is recommended according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.
